First Lady Marsha Barbour Awarded Medal of Excellence
(Jackson, Miss.) – Mississippi First Lady Marsha Barbour was awarded the Mississippi University of Women’s (MUW) Medal of Excellence award, along with four other recipients, in the Mary Ellen Weathersby Pope Banquet Room of the MUW President’s home, on Friday, May 5, 2006.
Alongside Governor Barbour, Mrs. Barbour was praised for representing the highest ideals of achievement and advocacy for the State of Mississippi in her tireless efforts in assisting some of the hardest hit areas immediately after Hurricane Katrina tore through the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
“In the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, Mrs. Barbour spent countless hours assisting in relief efforts on the Mississippi Coast,” Dr. Limbert, President of MUW, said. “Not content to watch from the comfort of the Governor’s Mansion in Jackson, she traveled to the devastated areas to offer her help. She is a role model for us all, and we are proud to call her our First Lady.”
Other 2006 Medal of Excellence recipients were June Debatin, Lewis Mallory, Martha Jo Mims and Bill Threadgill. Additionally, two guests were awarded honorary doctorates. The presentation of awards followed a private reception and dinner honoring the recipients.
