FIRST LADY MARSHA BARBOUR ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR
MISSISSIPPI CITIZEN CORPS COUNCILS
Jackson – First Lady Marsha Barbour announced her support today for the Mississippi Citizen Corps Council and their goal to increase the number of active local Citizen Corps Councils throughout Mississippi.
The mission of Citizen Corps Councils throughout the nation is to educate, train and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger and better prepared for disasters of all kinds, including terrorism, crime and public health issues.
“Citizen Corps represents volunteers who are trained to help the public in times of disaster and are the best example of neighbors helping neighbors,” First Lady Barbour said. “Mississippi will only be prepared for emergencies when each community is prepared. That’s why we want a Citizen Corps Council in every county, so that we’re prepared before the next disaster.”
As part of her promotion for Citizen Corps, the First Lady also recorded public service announcements encouraging participation in local councils. Those announcements will be sent today to radio stations statewide.
Mississippi Citizen Corps is a group of volunteers representing every sector of the community dedicated to making our state safer by developing new volunteer resources and public education programs for local communities.
This group is the lead organization for encouraging and assisting local Citizen Corps Councils throughout Mississippi. There are currently 16 local Citizen Corps Councils in the state.
Federal grants to support Citizen Corps councils provided $32,000 to Mississippi councils in fiscal year 2002 and another $108,500 in grants was made available in fiscal year 2004.
