(Jackson, Miss.) – First Lady Marsha Barbour today accepted approximately 3500 donated books from a program called “Share Education By The Book” on behalf of the Yazoo City Parenting Center.

“We are delighted to receive this shipment of library books that will be used here at the Center by children and adults,” said First Lady Marsha Barbour. “I would like to thank the ‘Share Education by the Book’ project leaders for promoting literacy in needy communities.”

A New Jersey Kiwanis Club, which started the program three years ago, has shipped over 4,000 books for children and adults to learning centers in need of literature and supplies. The Yazoo City Parenting Center was chosen as the recipient because of its partnership with the Yazoo City Schools and Holmes Community College. “This program could give our adults an opportunity to have books to read to their children, which will enhance the developmental skills of preschoolers and help prepare them for kindergarten,” Mrs. Barbour added.

Mississippi has 32 adult education programs statewide designed to give adults a second chance at a high school diploma. These programs serve approximately 35,000 adults each year, and receive limited funding from the U. S. Department of Education and some state workforce dollars.

“We are very grateful to the Montville Kiwanis Club, Roadway Express, Yazoo City Schools, Holmes Community College, and any others that had a hand in making this book delivery possible,” said Mrs. Barbour. “I know that the Center will use these books in a great way to help our citizens right here at home.”
