EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 993
Lowering of Flags in Honor of
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
WHEREAS, more than 2,400 Americans, including American Pacific Fleet military personnel, were killed during an unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, by Japanese forces during the Second World War; and
WHEREAS, these brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice as a result of their dedicated service to the United States military, defending our nation in the face of this tragedy with resolve, determination, and courage; and
WHEREAS, December 7, 1941, should be remembered in our nation’s history as a defining moment when the American military stepped forward to protect our freedom, preserve our liberty, and secure the future of democracy for the United States and nations around the world;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Haley Barbour, by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and laws of the State of Mississippi, do hereby proclaim a day of official remembrance in the State of Mississippi and do hereby order all flags of the State of Mississippi to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down on all buildings and grounds of the State of Mississippi and all areas under its jurisdiction on December 7, 2007, in honor of the individuals in service of America’s military forces who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.
