GOVERNOR MAKES REAPPOINTMENTS TO STATE INTERAGENCY COORDINATING COUNCIL FOR EARLY INTERVENTION
(JACKSON, Mississippi) – Governor Haley Barbour has reappointed Shona Jordan, of Pontotoc, and Linda G. Shivers, of Clinton, to the State Interagency Coordinating Council for Early Intervention (SICC), whose mission is to assist the Mississippi Department of Health and other lead agencies on matters dealing with early intervention for children with developmental disabilities, especially infants and toddlers.
“I appreciate the commitment each of these appointees has to promoting early intervention so developmentally challenged children can have a better chance at improving their educational and skill levels, as well as enhancing their quality of life,” Governor Barbour said. “These individuals have a true passion for our state’s children and I am confident they will continue to be great assets as Mississippi works to better address the needs of our developmentally disabled citizens.”
The SICC is statutorily required to consist of parents, public and private providers, a member of the Mississippi legislature, and a member from one of the state’s eight institutions of higher learning, as well as representation from other state agencies involved in early intervention and health insurance.
Shona Jordan is an elementary counselor at South Pontotoc Elementary School, where she has worked for over nine years. From 1993 to 1997, Jordan taught math at South Pontotoc High School, where she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” for the 1994-1995 school year; Jordan was also chosen “Educator of the Year” for the 2005-2006 school year. Jordan earned a bachelor’s degree from Blue Mountain College and master of education degree from the University of Mississippi. In her community, Jordan is a Pontotoc Women’s Club member.
For 12 years, Linda G. Shivers taught special education in the Clinton Public School system, and she served as Pediatric Education Director at the University of Mississippi Medical Center for 20 years. Currently, Shivers works at the research center as a grant administrator. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed her master of education and education specialist degree at Mississippi State University.
