$2 MILLION GRANT FUELS ACCO BRANDS EXPANSION

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today announced a $2 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) investment to Prentiss County, the city of Booneville and the Prentiss County Development Association, Inc., Miss. The investment will help build infrastructure improvements to the Prentiss County Industrial Park to serve the expansion of ACCO Brands, Inc., an office products manufacturer. The investment is expected to help create 287 new jobs and generate $43.5 million in private investment.

“President Bush and I are committed to partnering with communities to promote innovation and competitiveness. Through economic development grants like these, the Commerce Department will continue to encourage investments in local areas, grow the economy and create jobs,” said Gutierrez.

“This EDA grant will result in not only a major expansion of ACCO Brands’ facility in Booneville. It will also mean the company will shift jobs from Mexico to Mississippi. We appreciate EDA’s willingness to work closely with us to bring jobs back to America,” said Governor Haley Barbour.

“This will be a good investment in the future of Boonville and the Prentiss County area, and I was pleased to help secure this federal funding,” Senator Lott said. “I’ve always encouraged Mississippi’s municipalities and counties to be aggressive in pursuing economic development and jobs. Certainly this local initiative will help grow an important existing business, and it can also lay the foundation for new investment and new jobs in the future.”

EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
