GOVERNOR BARBOUR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR SEVERE WEATHER

Pearl – Governor Haley Barbour declared a State of Emergency today for the severe weather system that affected parts of the state late Thursday and early today.

“I directed the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency to move quickly to assess the damage from this powerful storm system and to offer every possible assistance to local governments as they respond. My declaration of a state of emergency was a necessary first step in the process,” Governor Haley Barbour said.

“The State of Emergency will allow state resources to be used throughout the affected areas to assist local governments as they respond to this disaster,” said MEMA Director Mike Womack.

The following are updated damage reports received by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s State Emergency Operations Center: • Harrison: one home with major damage, one with minor damage and six agricultural buildings damaged. • Jones: one home destroyed. • Kemper: eight homes with major damage and nine injuries reported in the southwest portion of the county. Of the nine injuries, five are reported as critical. • Lowndes: 13 homes with minor roof damage and one tree fell onto a car, but no injuries reported. • Neshoba County: six homes destroyed or with major damage; six homes with minor damage; seven agriculture buildings destroyed or with major damage. • Newton County: one home with major damage, six with minor damage and five agricultural buildings damaged.

• Stone: four homes with major damage and one business destroyed, one business with major damage and four businesses with minor damage.

MEMA Area Coordinators have been deployed to the counties where damages were reported.
