GOVERNOR BARBOUR: MISSISSIPPI AT RECORD EMPLOYMENT
(JACKSON, Mississippi) – Mississippi has achieved a record employment level, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Governor Haley Barbour said the non-farm, seasonally-adjusted employment level rose to 1,161,700 in June, which topped the previous high mark of 1,160,500 set in May 2000. While employment figures are released in various categories, the non-farm, seasonally adjusted category is seen by most economists as the most accurate reflection of the state of the workforce at any given time.
“Reaching this historic level is great news because it emphasizes the strength and growing diversity of our economy,” Governor Barbour said. “It is a positive sign that we are moving in the right direction. At the same time, there is still more to do, which is why we need to keep working to create more and better jobs in Mississippi.”
Statistical information on non-farm, seasonally adjusted employment is gathered by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, a unit of the U.S. Department of Labor that tracks employment figures.
