FIRST LADY DEDICATES BASKETBALL COURT AT MARSHA BARBOUR RESOURCE CENTER
(Jackson, Mississippi) – First Lady Marsha Barbour was flanked by representatives from the NBA Cares, Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA organizations today as she celebrated the dedication of a refurbished basketball court at the Marsha Barbour Community Resource Center located in Pass Christian, one of the earliest and hardest hit areas of Hurricane Katrina. Joining Mrs. Barbour at the dedication ceremony was NBA legend and Hall-of-Famer Clyde Drexler, formerly of the Houston Rockets, and Hilton Armstrong, current forward-center for the New Orleans Hornets.
“It is such an honor to join with Clyde, Hilton, and the NBA organizations as we dedicate this new basketball court for the youth of Pass Christian and surrounding communities,” Mrs. Barbour said. “Today’s event is just one more reminder of the charity and outpouring of assistance Mississippi has received after Katrina, and I can tell you first hand that our residents are so appreciative of all that your organizations have done and continue to do.”
To continue their support of the rebuilding efforts along the Gulf Coast, NBA Cares selected the Marsha Barbour Resource Center as the site for the newly built basketball court. Named in honor of the First Lady’s tireless efforts following Katrina, the Marsha Barbour Resource Center is designed to serve as an important resource that addresses the long term needs of the Pass Christian community in job training assistance, life rebuilding, counseling, sports and the arts.
“I truly hope coastal residents realize the Resource Center is a place where everyone—children, teenagers, even adults—can come together and develop a stronger sense of community,” Mrs. Barbour said. “Locating this basketball court at the Center is just one more step that will help the Center achieve this goal.”
Following the dedication, the NBA Cares, Jr. NBA, and Jr. WNBA organizations hosted a basketball clinic for aspiring players, ages 9-13. The clinic comes as part of the second annual Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA “Summer Camp Tour,” which will hit 12 cities across the nation and Canada from June 13-August 15, 2007.
