GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTS GAGE TO BOARD OF EDUCATION

(JACKSON, Mississippi)—Governor Haley Barbour has appointed Howell “Hal” Gage, of Vicksburg, to the State Board of Education, which works to develop a system-wide plan of performance, policy, and direction of public education in Mississippi. The Department is responsible for regulating matters such as curriculum, teacher standards and certification, student testing, accountability, and school accreditation.

“Education is a top priority of my Administration, and I’m proud to appoint capable, strong leaders like Hal to serve on the state’s foremost educational authority,” Governor Barbour said. “Hal will be a great asset to the board and I look forward to his good works in this capacity.”

Gage has been chairman of RiverHills Bank since 2000. Previously, he served as chairman of BancorpSouth’s Vicksburg advisory board; president and chairman of Merchants Bank; and vice president of Port Gibson Bank. Within his community, Gage is a member of the River Region Medical Center board of trustees and serves as advisory director of the Hinds Community College Foundation and the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits. He also serves as chairman of the Vicksburg Medical Foundation. From 1992 to 1998, Gage was vice president and then president of the Vicksburg-Warren School District board of trustees, and he also served as vice chairman of the Vicksburg-Warren Community Alliance. In 1996, he was a member of the

Mississippi Taskforce on Restructuring of the Minimum Education Program.

Gage earned a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master of business administration from Harvard University. He and his wife, Betsy, have three children, Nick, Maury, and Rosanna.
