Governor Barbour Appoints Rester to Gulfport State Port Authority
(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of John Rester, of Biloxi, to the Gulfport State Port Authority for a five-year term, ending December 8, 2009. The Gulfport State Port Authority is used to manage or operate port facilities in Gulfport. These port facilities include waterways for shipping providing wharves, piers, docks, warehouses, cranes, and other investments at ports.
“John is well-qualified for this role,” said Governor Barbour. “He has extensive experience in this area, and I feel confident he will serve the people of Mississippi well.”
John Rester began his career in Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in 1965, working as a part-time funeral home attendant and ambulance driver. In 1979, Rester became the sole shareholder of Mobile Medic Ambulance Service, which became the largest EMS provider in Mississippi. In November 1992, Mobile Medic became the first acquisition of the newly formed national ambulance AMR. At that time, Rester was named Senior Vice President of AMR in addition to his duties as President and CEO of Mobile Medic.
Rester serves as President of the Mississippi State Port Authority, as a past president of the Gulfport Rotary Club, and as a graduate and past Chairman of Leadership Gulf Coast. Rester has also served as Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and Chairman of the Community Development Commission.
