A Proclamation

WHEREAS, in March of 1904, the Village of Inverness, consisting of but two hundred hardy souls, was chartered by the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, one of the early settlers of this rich, green plateau along Mound Bayou was William McInnis who gave eighty-eight acres of land for right-of-way to the Illinois Central Railroad to extend the famous Yellow Dog line from Moorhead to Yazoo City; and

WHEREAS, because of this donation, McInnis’ widow, Addie, was given the right to name the growing settlement and bestowed upon it the name of Inverness after her mother’s Scottish hometown of Inverness, Scotland; and

WHEREAS, this small encampment in the Delta has weathered untold hardships, including surviving the great flood of 1927 almost untouched, to grow to a town of nearly 1200 people; and

WHEREAS, the townspeople and their distinguished guests will be celebrating Inverness’ 100th birthday on March 27, 2004:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Haley Barbour, Governor of the State of Mississippi, hereby proclaim March 5th, 2004, as

TOWN OF INVERNESS CENTENNIAL DAY

in the State of Mississippi and rescind any previous proclamation regarding this celebration.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Mississippi to be affixed.

DONE in the City of Jackson, on the fifteenth day of March in the year of our Lord, two thousand and four, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and twenty-eighth.
