Governor Barbour Appoints Baas to State Personnel Board and Names Williams Chairman of Workers’ Compensation Commission
(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour announced today two appointments dealing with employment issues. John A. Baas, of Ridgeland, will be the Governor’s appointee to the State Personnel Board. Bass will replace Liles Williams, of Raymond, who is being appointed Chairman of the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Commission. Bass will represent the First Supreme Court District and will serve an unexpired term beginning January 1, 2005, and ending June 20, 2008. Williams will serve a six-year term beginning January 1, 2005, and ending December 31, 2010, joining Lydia Quarles, of Jackson, and Barney Schoby, of Natchez, who are also Commissioners.
“I am very proud of these appointments,” said Governor Barbour. “Both John and Liles bring a wealth of talent to the table. They both have had extensive experience dealing with human resources and employment issues, and I know they will do an excellent job serving the citizens of Mississippi.”
Baas currently works as the Director of Industrial Relations for the Mississippi Manufacturer’s Association. Baas has worked as the Human Resource Manager for Homelite Division of Textron, as the Corporate Personnel Director for Ditto Apparel of California, Inc., as the Division Personnel Supervisor for Kellwood Company, and as the Personnel Manager for Edward Hyman Company. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education from Mississippi State University and is married to Sandy Baas. They have three children: Shelley Marie, Lindsey Lea, and Dylan Wade.
Williams currently serves as the Vice President and Assistant to the President of Stuart C. Irby Company in Jackson. He graduated from Hinds Junior College and received his Bachelor’s degree from Belhaven College. Williams has served as the Executive Vice President of IRBY Corp., as manager for the Interstate Electric Company, and as a purchasing agent for Mississippi Chemical Corporation. He has served as President of the Board for the Mississippi World Trade Center, founding Vice Chairman of the Mississippi Partnership for Economic Development, and as Chairman of the Mississippi Product Liability Task Force. He is married to the former Ruth Ann Orr and has four daughters and 11 grandchildren.
