GOVERNOR BARBOUR ORDERS ALL FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF
Honoring Former President Ronald Reagan

(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour Saturday ordered all flags at Mississippi state buildings to be flown at half-staff for a period of thirty days in honor of former President Ronald Reagan who died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 93.

“Ronald Reagan was a favorite of an overwhelming majority of Mississippians, and rightly so,” Barbour said. “It is out of respect for this great American that we fly our flags at half-staff this next month.”

Governor Barbour, who was director of the White House Office of Political Affairs under Reagan from 1985 to 1986, said no other president in his lifetime had so much success in domestic and foreign policy.

“President Reagan was a genuine leader who put policies in place that restored America’s economic health and created over 20 million new jobs after a difficult period of stagflation. As president, he rebuilt our military and reinvigorated our confidence in ourselves. The result was the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the elimination of totalitarian Communism and Western victory in the Cold War.”

Governor Barbour also commented on his personal and working relationship with former President Reagan.

“While I admire and appreciate the enormous achievements of Ronald Reagan as president and leader of the free world, I will never forget the personal courtesies he showed me, his consideration of me and others who worked to accomplish his goals, or the obvious, deep affection he had for Mrs. Reagan,” Barbour said. “Marsha and I extend to her our heartfelt sympathy and our warmest regards.”

On January 29th, Governor Barbour proclaimed February 6th, 2004, Ronald Reagan Day in the State of Mississippi, which was the date of the former President’s ninety-third birthday.
