Governor Barbour Appoints Gates to Workforce Investment Board

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Linda Gates, of West Point, to the state Workforce Investment Board, for a four-year term ending June 30, 2008. The Workforce Investment Board is charged with developing and submitting a strategic plan for an integrated state workforce development system that aligns resources and structures the system to more effectively and efficiently meet the demands of Mississippi’s employers and job seekers.

“Linda is well-qualified for this role,” said Governor Barbour. “She has extensive experience in this area, and I feel confident she will serve the people of Mississippi well.”

Linda Gates is current employed as the Work-based Learning Coordinator (WBL) for East Mississippi Community College (EMCC). She has also served as a career development specialist in the Workforce Development Center at EMCC, as the Assistant Director for Business Week and instructor at the Mississippi University for Women, and as a teacher and legislative liaison for the Jackson Public Schools. Gates received her Education Specialist, Masters, and Bachelor of Science degrees from Mississippi College and her Associate of Arts degree at Hinds Community College.

Gates has numerous experience with workforce development initiatives, including working with Create Foundation Northeast Mississippi Workforce Develop Strategy, Steering Committee; Crescent, Steering and Education Committees; Future of East Mississippi and West Alabama, Participant; Blueprint Mississippi, Focus Group Participant; and Mississippi Educational Initiative, Regional Forum Facilitator. Gates has also served as a civilian appointee to military advisory groups that promote education and training, such as the Mississippi Army Reserve Ambassador; Air Education and Training Command Civic Group, (represents Columbus Air Force Base); and Defense Advisory Group for Women in the Military, Quality of Life Subcommittee.
