(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Dr. Henry A. Maggio, of Gulfport, to the State Board of Mental Health. The Board is designed to ensure that quality services and opportunities are provided to people who experience problems with mental illness, alcohol and/or drug abuse, and developmental disabilities.

“Dr. Maggio is an excellent choice,” said Governor Barbour. “He has years of healthcare experience, both medical and psychiatric, that make him very well-qualified for this Board. I am confident he will serve the people of Mississippi well.”

Dr. Henry A. Maggio practices psychiatry at his own office, Henry A. Maggio, M.D., P.A. Maggio is licensed to practice medicine and psychiatry by the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. He has 44 years of medical practice and 35 years of psychiatry work; Maggio’s experience includes working as the head of the psychiatric unit at Memorial Hospital and participating in Mental Health Clinic work. He is a member of the Mississippi and American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Additionally, he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1961 to 1964.

Dr. Maggio attended Loyola University for his Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. He earned his degree in medicine from the Louisiana State University’s Medical Center in 1961 and his degree in psychiatry from the same institution in 1973. He is married to the former Bobby Ruth Padgett; together, they have four children: Michael Anthony, Stephen Joseph, Melissa Ann, and Shannon Julie.
