GOVERNOR BARBOUR URGES MISSISSIPPIANS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EASY, FREE ELECTRONIC TAX PREPARATION
Governor Haley Barbour announced a partnership with the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) aimed at helping lower- and moderate-income Mississippi taxpayers - including those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, active-duty military, students, and seniors - to electronically prepare and file their taxes for free.

Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Ocean Springs attorney G. Charles Bordis IV to the Chancery Court seat for District 16, which includes George, Greene and Jackson counties.

HANDY HARDWARE TO BUILD DISTRIBUTION FACILITY IN MERIDIAN
Governor Haley Barbour announced today that Handy Hardware, a member-owned hardware buying group, will open a distribution center in Meridian. The company plans to employ more than 150 people.

GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR'S STATEMENT ON EMINENT DOMAIN
Governor Haley Barbour's statement on eminent domain "If the bill that passed the Senate today were to become law, it would be a major impediment to Mississippi's job creation efforts. Toyota would not be coming to Mississippi if this had been the law in 2007, and the Senators recognized that fact by an amendment they included in the bill."

STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR ON EMINENT DOMAIN LEGISLATION
“Lawmakers in the House who supported the use of eminent domain for major economic development realize that without it Mississippi would not be home to Stennis Space Center, Nissan, or Toyota, nor would the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway’s route through Mississippi have been able to attract manufacturing facilities. None of these huge job-creating projects could have happened without the use of eminent domain in special circumstances for economic development.”

"States need an effective, targeted stimulus package to shore up dwindling state revenues. The legislation currently being considered includes excess spending and impedes states' abilities to manage their own programs. I will oppose any stimulus package that increases states' costs and taxes, or results in federal control over state-administered programs."

GOVERNOR BARBOUR, FORMER RNC CHAIRMAN, SAYS THE PARTY WILL AGAIN HAVE TO SELL IDEAS, NOT ACCESS

Haley Barbour has a message for Republicans still dispirited by the November elections: "We've been in a lot worse shape than this. . . . When I first started working in politics during the Watergate era only 16% of Americans identified themselves as Republicans." He recalls one incident in the mid 1970s when "Mary Louise Smith, the chairman of the party, appointed a committee to change the name of the party. You can't get much lower than that."

Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Assistant United States Attorney James D. Maxwell II of Oxford to the Mississippi Court of Appeals effective March 1, 2009. Maxwell will serve through January 2, 2011.
